You are what you think, you are what you believe

Many of us have handed over our health and well being to an outsider called the ‘good doctor’. In effect, we have given up an innate capability of healing ourselves when something goes out of balance in our body. This capability comes through our own belief system. As with anything, if we believe we can, it may come true and if we believe otherwise, that will come true too. This is true for our health too.

Now there is research to prove this.

Bruce Lipton in his book Biology of Belief wrote;

“I was exhilarated by new realization that I could change the character of my life by changing my beliefs.”

We live in a delicate dynamic balance, not only with other life forms, but with the physical environment as well. It was life’s harmony – not life’s struggle – that Lipton was inspired by.

Biology’s central premise is that genes control life. “Not so”, says Lipton. “It is our environment and beliefs and not our gene driven hormones and neurotransmitters that control our bodies and minds”.

This opposes contemporary biology that lingers in the physical age of Newtonian linear thinking as opposed to the new quantum age where there are no absolutes. The quantum world is invisible. It is about fields of energy and cannot be physically grasped. Our beliefs are not absolute. They are personal and how and what we believe cannot be measured in any way.

Biology also pays little attention to the important role of cooperation, because it’s Darwinian roots emphasize life’s competitive nature. So, the world has shaped itself around the ‘survival of the fittest’ philosophy. So, we generally leave things up to the genes.

Biology is also in alignment with the Cartesian system of development where the mind and body split is its cornerstone. Body is physical and mind is not. Quantum philosophy, on the other hand, accepts the mind-body linkage and accepts mind as a field of energy.

So, what is standing in the way of people moving in the quantum direction ?

It is the fear of the unknown compounded by the medical establishment’s propagation of the old system for its own survival and economic gains.

So, the medical establishment has the whole world sewn up in their philosophy of “The good doctor is always right”. So, we hand over our illness to the ‘good doctor’ who writes us a prescription for some chemicals, which we happily take and get better. So, the cycle is perpetuated and reinforced. We are afraid to move outside this paradigm. After all this is our life we are dealing with. What we do not realize is that the most ‘good doctors’ have a huge pharmaceutical industry behind them. That is why news such as the western medical industry kills as many as 300,000 people annually in the USA (Death by Medicine; Null et al – 2003) gets stifled by the establishment.

We are also happy to ignore this as we have become comfortable with our dependence on the ‘good doctor’ – who may not be so good for our health after all.

So, this requires a mind shift in our thinking. We need to value ourselves more and trust in our own belief system. This is linked to our self esteem.

Self Esteem
If we define self esteem as the confidence in our right to be happy, feeling of being worthy and the ability to think and cope with the basic challenges of life, our beliefs are central to keeping our esteem up.

If our self esteem is low we may not have confidence in our own belief system.

So, how do we build our self esteem when it comes to our health? It is not easy.

I am not espousing that we abandon the medical system entirely. It has its merits in overcoming many health hazards that could destroy us. It just needs to be put in perspective. We have to understand that it has limitations too. On the other hand, as thinking, believing humans, we have a major say in managing our own health. Drugs may cure a particular illness, but often it has other side effects, that may make us ill later and even kill.

Also when we go to the doctor and take the prescribed drugs, we hand over the entire process of curing to them. We do not take ownership of the problem and the solution. So, we become passive observers in the process. We lose our self esteem in the process, as we feel helpless.

When we understand that our mind and beliefs can help in the cure, in balancing the system, our self esteem will rise.

What proof is there that our mind has so much power ?

The Proof in the Placebo
A placebo is an inert drug (usually a sugar pill) given in place of a drug for a certain illness. Scientists have done many experiments using placebos as alternatives to actual drugs in controlled experiments and found people get cured in the same way. How can that be ?

The only explanation is that our minds were fooled into believing that the drug, whether it was a sugar pill or a chemical, was going to cure us. Only that we believed it was a drug. This belief sent a signal to our mind to commence the curing process. Once we realize that it was just a sugar pill that cured us, it will enable us to think differently about the power of our beliefs. That will lead to our increased self esteem, when it comes to health.

Self esteem is also linked to our emotional well being. Our ability to respect self and others and live positively amongst others is a part of this. These are based on our values and behaviors which in turn anchor our emotional well being. Go deeper and all this is based on our spirituality.

We need to put spirituality back into life when we want to improve our physical and mental health. So, we have to become more aware of our mind and body. Becoming aware will help us to realize that we do have control over it all. A fully conscious mind wins over both nurture and nature.

So, Lipton, through his research and the book has given credence to age old traditional health systems like Ayurveda that are usually ridiculed by the establishment. It has also given us an opportunity to take better control of our lives, which will result in improving self esteem, thereby becoming more aware citizens of this world.

Lipton says, “You can live a life of fear or live a life of love. If you live a life of love your body will respond with good health”.

The biomedical model is one of reduction, it reduces you to the labeling system of the diagnosis: "You are your disease." Even in serious illness, there's actually more that's going right in the body than wrong. And we always remain so much more than any label.

It tends to be a disempowering model too, where the lab coat has all authority. It's not so much the doctors anymore, but the the pharm industry which sees the profit potential of lifelong meds.

Allopathic medicine has its place like you say. It's good in emergencies, accidents, life-saving surgeries. Integrative medicine is where it needs to be and we can hope.

In the meantime the body self-heals. Even with the most radical surgery or invasive drug regimen, it's still the body's self-healing mechanisms in action.

Self-healing can be triggered inwardly, by belief like you say or other ways too. It's already at work, but we can utilize it consciously & regularly.

I am living proof of what you have outlined in the article. So far, in my life, I nave reveresed and healed myself from Hepatitis C, diabetes and CHD (after quadruple bypass) by applying the essesnce of my spiritual self to my daily living. It was not easy but it has been simple and my sense now of who I am and the tremendous power I have gained from that awareness is something that NO medical intervention could ever give me. True healing can only come from within oneself and listening to the grerater wisdom of your spiritual truths. Yes, the CABG I had cured my sympton. The spiritual healing I practice daily gave me my life and brought me true and deeper healing. For that I am extremely grateful !!

I can't believe that people still believe in that infantile, Emile Coue ^<bleep^>. Sure, a positive attitude is a good thing and does help. But let's not throw out a mountain of evidence AGAINST the power of conscious autosuggestion, because somebody comes out with a book filled with stories of people who had good attitudes and got better. Why not also write about the people with negative attitudes who got better? Or people with positive attitudes who didn't get better? This all might hold some appeal for some, because of the idea. But sometimes, ideas don't measure up to the scrutiny of reality. For evidence of this, look no further the ideas of the current president. Or heck, Emile Coue himself, who died shortly after coming up with this .

Very insightful to realize that we have a lot of control over our own health and healing. We continue to move away from basic, simple truths and towards mass produced intelligence.

While a positive outlook is needed to succeed in just about anything - when it comes to your health and how your body heals itself - don't forget that you have to give it the right stuff to work with.

Your Lexus needs premium gasoline. What about your body?

There are many foods that will help you heal. Make sure to learn about them. Most people don't because they don't believe it will work. Oh gosh, there's that belief thing again!

Good Food + Good Attitude = Super Charged Life!

Take Care of Yourself.

It's all a circle or a balance of the above. First take care of yourself or you can't take care of others, 2nd take care of others this feeds your soul, your soul takes care of your beliefs, your belief is self respect, eating and thinking good things. You loose your balance or do too much in one direction or neglect yourself and the whole thing comes down. We live in a world where we do too much, have too much, eat too much- all things must have moderation-when you think too much about bad stuff you become depressed (atleast I did) for me I had to fiqure out what I needed in order to take care of myself and sometimes this isn't easy. When your world is moving too fast to not listen to what your body needs you are really cheating yourself, this is not giving more of yourself to family or others, this is shortening your life.

My dad has alzheimers, can't walk without a walker, wears depends, can't bathe himself, can't be left alone, has diabetes, controlled anemia, doesn't remember if I fed him breakfast or lunch at dinner time, see's kittens jumping out of boots that aren't there, can't leave the house without me taking him. Last night he was really tired at bedtime and when I tucked him in I told him, "Hey Rocky, keep fightin", he looked into my eyes and I know he understood me, then he laughed.

Do not give up on your own fight, we all have areas of our lives where this is needed and the doctors office is no exception.

Live simply. Simply live.

Are people so far divorced from reality that they accept this on face value? Nice idea, sure, but where's the large scale evidence?

Big medicine is killing us all by taking our hard earned money and giving us quack medicine.

Just think, why do they have "doctors of pharmacy" i.e. Pharm D credentialed people who just count pills?

A dear dear friend of mine fought long and hard against an incurable illness. because we don't have socialized medicine, she was force to sell all of her belongings including treasured family heirlooms just to meet the payment for some of the medicines that in the end did not prevent a premature and quite painful death.

Wonderful post, thanks. I discovered Bruce Lipton and Gregg Braden several months ago and am so excited by their writing. It resonates with me on a deep level and I find truth in it. My life is changing with this new knowledge. It is ours to adopt or abandon.

As a kindred spirit I knew you would be interested in this article in wrote for my website. I was reading an article about the new wave of activism that is occurring all around the world. People are taking action and making a difference and a contribution, each in their own unique way. I realized I felt quite excited reading the many varieties of activism available to each of us. I am an inner activist, I am a person who has dedicated her life to Self Awareness without Judgment. I have a deep knowing that to live to my full potential and make a meaningful contribution to humanity I need to shed the light of self awareness on my thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. Through self awareness I will learn whether I am in a state of clarity about a relationship or subject, or whether I am caught in an emotional reaction that comes from my past. Self awareness will show me the specifics of the unconscious content that is causing me to behave in a way that guarantees my suffering and sense of alienation and victimhood. After seeing the truth, I have a choice whether to continue being controlled by the past, which is over, or choose to be present and take action based on reality of the now. Each of us has the opportunity to do this at any moment. A powerful way to do this is to check in and sense how you are breathing and if you are breathing, and how the state of your emotions and thoughts are impacting your body, right now. This will assist you in knowing whether or not you are present. We all have an impact on those around us. The question is, do we like the impact we are having, and how does it make us feel? It is only when we are present that we have the capacity to transform our lives and positively affect those around us. We need never feel frustrated and victimized by outer circumstances, once we begin to be an inner activist we will know that by developing our capacity to be present we are contributing to humanity. This happens naturally. As we develop self awareness we will simultaneously develop clarity, acting from this place will empower us and everyone we encounter. The time to act is NOW, the place to act from is wherever you are. There is no time to waste. We all need to be clear, fully empowered, and fully engaged, not only for ourselves, but for each other and all humanity. for more information please go to my website www.lifemasteryskills.com
