Not your typical fitness class
A fitness-and-lifestyle practise suitable for all ages.
If you dont enjoy dervish-style spins, karate chops and walking around the room like a penguin, read no further. Because thats what youre likely to be asked to do if you join a Nia class. Nia, formerly known as Neuromuscular Integrative Action, is a fitness-and-lifestyle practise suitable for all ages that uses a combination of martial arts, dance, aerobics and improvisation to promote both joy and health, in body and mind. Nia is performed barefoot, to a variety of music mindfully selected to inspire a range of physical, emotional and mental responses. This form of expressive movement encourages the body to follow the path of least resistance, rather than forcing it into uncomfortable positions. Instructors use imagery to help students get moving. Nia studios are popping up everywhere, from South Africa to Sweden. If youre looking to shed some pounds, and some inhibitions, you might want to get with the Nia movement.
